This Weekend: Shamrocks, Country and Lots of Sequins

March 16, 2012

Friday night, you need to go to Strange Matter and check out the amazing Marionette, Ocean vs. Daughter and Canary Oh Canary. Seriously, you just need to. Marionette is one of the best Richmond bands around and OvsD provides plenty of dreamy folk pop.

On Saturday, March 17, head down to Shockoe Bottom for Shamrock the Block. The all day drunk fest outdoor festival will feature music all day from great local acts Downbeat Switch, Rosie Soul, Against Grace, 4Play and headliner Sleeper Agent, which sounds like a fun get up and dance type band.

Sleeper Agent – Get Burned

The Shamrock the Block Afterparty heads to Hat Factory (excuse me, Epic Theatre) for a performance by country singer Chris Cagle. He had a bunch of hits in the early 2000s and I admit to getting into his “Chicks Dig It” song. Then, he disappeared for a while, got in domestic disputes with his girlfriend and is now apparently working on a new album.

Chris Cagle – Got My Country On

And of course, don’t forget over at the Richmond Coliseum…

Elton John – I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues

Trans-Siberian Orchestra Rings in the Holidays

November 29, 2011

Nothing says the holidays like a live show of loud music and pyrotechnics. The ever-popular holiday-meets-metal band Trans-Siberian Orchestra will be performing classic holiday songs mixed in with some heavy metal goodness (and plenty of fire!) at the Richmond Coliseum on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Josh Groban at the Richmond Coliseum

June 14, 2011

Josh Groban’s “Straight To You” tour is the singer’s first full-scale global arena tour since 2007 and will bring the feel of a theater experience to an arena setting. Groban will interact with audiences and perform favorites from his best-selling albums tonight at the Richmond Coliseum. Tickets are pricey, so maybe you should just listen to the tracks below and pretend to be there.

Josh Groban – Higher Window

Josh Groban – Hidden Away

Josh Groban – Voce Existe Em Mim

Salt N Pepa’s Here! (But Snoop Dogg is Not)

March 24, 2011

Fans of old school 90s hip hop take note. Salt N Pepa will be hitting the Richmond Coliseum on Friday, March 25 for their Legends of Hip Hop Tour. Other acts on the tour include Whodini, Rob Base, Kurtis Blow, Doug E Fresh, Biz Markie, Naughty By Nature, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee, Slick Rick and Chubb Rock.

Some of my favorite Salt N Pepa songs.

Salt N Pepa – Push It

Salt N Pepa – Shoop

Snoop Dogg was also scheduled to perform the same night at the National, making Richmond one great night for hip hop. Unfortunately due to the death and subsequent funeral of his close friend Nate Dogg, Snoop was forced to reschedule his date from this Friday to April 26. All Tickets purchased for this show will be honored on the new date. Black Liquid & Photosythensizers, who were opening for Snoop, will still be performing this Friday. All Snoop Dogg ticket holders can get into this show for free and will get to keep their tickets for the Apr 26th show.

And just because I had the songs ready, here’s a new track from Snoop Dogg and one of his classics.

Snoop Dogg – Boom (feat. T-Pain)

Snoop Dogg – Gin & Juice

Michael Bublé’s Favorite Restaurant is Mamma Zu

July 8, 2010

Crooner Michael Bublé graced Richmond with his presence on Tuesday where he danced and sang and did his best imitation of Frank Sinatra.

I was unable to make it to the show Richmond Coliseum, where apparently Bublé said his favorite Richmond restaurant ever was Mamma Zu. Guess he likes bad service and mediocre food.

I did make it down to the Norfolk show at the Constant Convocation Center and the show was exactly what I expected. Young girls and middle aged women alike screaming their heads off all saying they wanted to marry Bublé (or at least have his babies).

I will say Bublé knows how to put on a show. The lights and the numerous instruments made the performance feel like a huge show. And Buble’s energy on stage as he sang his hits “Home,” “Save The Last Dance” and “Mack The Knife” was like none other I’ve seen in a good while. And to top things off, the crowd went into a frenzy when he performed his latest single “Haven’t Met You Yet.”

I’m quite enjoying this Michael Bublé fellow and his music. I’ll just have to overlook his restaurant choices.

Stephen Frost Concert for Massey Cancer Research

June 17, 2010

Alternative pop musician Stephen Frost is performing at the Richmond Raiders Football game at the Richmond Coliseum on Saturday, June 19. The show is a benefit for the Massey Cancer Research Center.

I’ve know Stephen Frost for a while and his music is some of the most unconventional and intriguing stuff I’ve heard in the longest time. I’m honestly surprised to see him at an event at a place like the Coliseum, but good to know he’s still making good music.
