If you happen to be in Short Pump on Saturday, June 2, head over to the Chick-fil-A for “Chickenstock III,” a day-long festival featuring lots of activities, food and live music from the Trillions, Atlee Community Church Band and others. The festival will be benefiting LINK’s charitable actions in the African country of Niger with our proceeds going to their efforts.

End The Drug War Concert & Rally

April 20, 2012

It’s 4/20, a day commonly associated with marijuana use. However you feel about the issue, there’s a big party happening at Monroe Park which you may want to check out.

The End the Drug War Concert and Rally takes place today from 1-6 p.m. and features music from People’s Blues of RichmondAnteroNight IdeaYoung Adult Fiction and Midair. The event will also include speakers Adam KokeshMatthew FoggMichael KrawitzEric Sterling and Nathan Cox.

From the press release:
April 20th in 2012 will signal a shift in how people view drug policy. With a majority 50% of Americans favoring marijuana legalization last year for the first time, it is evident that the War on Drugs should end.

The failures of the war on drugs stretch deep into various sectors of our society. From the 40,000 dead in Mexico since 2006, to the arrest of medical marijuana patients for using their medicine, the war on drugs affects us all.

From police shot down on the job by cartels that generate revenue from prohibition, to college students who are stripped of financial aid for having possessed a drug, the war on drugs hurts our ability to live prosperously.

Why in the World is Less Than Jake Playing A Neighborhood Festival?

October 13, 2011

When I heard about Fantoberfest going on this weekend, i figured it was just a music festival to compete with the Richmond Folk Festival with a bunch of local bands playing. But then I found out ska punk rockers Less Than Jake were headlining and I had to do a double take.

Here is a band that has been hugely popular for many years, sold out many shows and is worldwide famous and now they are playing a simple neighborhood festival? I’m still weirded out by this. These guys deserve to play somewhere big like the National or at the very least Canal Club.

However, I’ve seen these guys numerous times and they do put on an amazing show. It should be a good time, minus all the obnoxious drunks (it’s a microbrew festival as well). Also playing are Kings of Belmont, No BS Brass Band, The Big Payback (a James Brown cover band), The Gill, Cheap Thrills, Peoples Blues of Richmond and Audio Ammo.
