I cannot even begin to thank all of you who came out to the birthday party last night. I was surprised by last year’s turnout, but I couldn’t have been prepared by the amount of people who showed up this time. The place was packed with people enjoying music and I couldn’t have asked for a better crowd.
Major thanks go out to the Camel for once again hosting the event.
Thank you to Anousheh for starting the night off right, Long Arms for making everyone get up and move and Horsehead for keeping the party going to the late hours. Also, thank you to James, Ward and John for the pre and mid-show entertainment.
Thank you to Matt Klimas for another amazing poster.
Thank you yet again to The Cheats Movement for taking photos of the event. #weseeit
And lastly, I’d like to thank all of you who read the blog, retweeted links, spammed your friends on Facebook, sent messages about how excited you were and everyone who showed up for a show when they could have been doing something else that evening. It seriously meant the world to me.
Well, tonight’s the night. If you haven’t been paying attention to the spamming I’ve been doing recently, then you’ll need to know that the birthday party celebrating RVA Playlist’s 3-year anniversary is tonight, May 29, at the Camel featuring Anousheh, Long Arms and Horsehead. I am beyond excited for the show and hope all you lovely readers can make it out to this free show.
Besides the bands, there’s also a lot more going on incluing:
James Menefee from Long Arms and Ward Harrison from Hackensaw Boys will be playing some acoustic songs before the show starts as pre-show entertainment.
There will be raffle prizes from Steady Sounds, Friday Cheers, Blanchards Coffee, Triple Stamp Press, The Camel and others.
The night doubles as a release show as Horsehead releases the vinyl for their 2012 album “Sympathetic Vibrations.”
There’s cake. You can’t have a birthday without cake.
RVA Playlist is celebrating 3 years of highlighting the Richmond music scene and once again, it’s time for a celebration. The good people at the Camel are helping me present a night of great music on Wednesday, May 29 featuring a bunch Richmond bands who have been very supportive of the site. Last year, the place was packed and hopefully this year, parking tickets will not be involved.
Doors at 8pm. Show starts at 9pm sharp. This is a FREE event. So come out and have a great time. There will be cake again this year plus some really awesome prizes to be announced soon.
One part deep Carolina soul, one part rock and roll, Delta Rae takes a fun, unique spin on country and folk music and creates something new and exciting. VH1 selected Delta Rae as their “You Oughta Know” Artist Of The Month for October and has moved their video for their single, “Bottom Of The River,” into heavy rotation.
They’ll be showing off their stuff tonight at the National in a show that’s sure to get some toes moving. Anousheh and Long Arms will be opening.
Happy Earth Day everybody! What better way to celebrate taking care of our mother Earth than by partying over in Manchester with free food, activities and live music. The Earth Day Festival takes place on Saturday, April 21, from 12-7 p.m. at Hull and 1st Street.
I’m sure by now, you’ve been bombarded by information on this weekend’s big music festival – the RVA Music Fest. It’s safe to say that Shockoe Bottom is going to be insanely crowded and lots of good music will be heard.
The festival has been in the works for quite some time and if successful, could lead to an annual event of showing off some of the best music Richmond has to offer.
Just look at everything included in the two-day festival.

Now, as awesome as this event is, all the acts playing are seriously focused on one particular scene. It’s completely catering to the indie rock and underground crowds – which is the typical crowd who reads RVA Magazine (the event’s sponsor). Don’t get me wrong, all the local bands participating are incredible and there is some amazing talent taking the stage, but Richmond’s folk, jazz and pop rock scenes are completely ignored. I wouldn’t get so worked up if the festival wasn’t touted as “The music festival of Richmond” and “showing off the best of local music” because it’s not. It’s only one small part of an even more amazing bigger scene.
And I’m surprised that Richmond’s two biggest music venues – The National and the Canal Club – are not included in the showcase evening (maybe because they are not advertisers in RVA Magazine, but I could be wrong on this). While they’re not on the official RVA Music Fest bill, The National and Canal Club are also hosting local acts the same evening.
The Canary Promise, East Coast Secondaries, Empire, Gandhi’s Gunmen, Others May Fall, The Weakest – The National
Seraph, Beyond The Victory, This Mountain is Man, Artifice, Silence is a Burden – The Canal Club
Hopefully if this festival becomes a yearly event, groups in other genres can be included in the lineup which would create a more diverse selection of artists and by doing so, bring in a lot more people.
In any case, the RVA Music Fest will be the place to be this weekend. Go and enjoy live local music.
Long Arms, whose album “Long Arms to Hold You” was easily my favorite album of the year, and Horsehead, whose album “Before the Bright Lights” was my 2nd favorite album of the year, are releasing a new split 7″ record with a big party at the Camel on Saturday with special guest Justin Jones. Word is that there will be cake.
