The popular Silent Music Revival concert series is back with another installment at Gallery5 on Sunday, April 14.

For those not in the know (seriously get in the know on this event), the Silent Music Revival projects a classic silent film and has live music playing as the film’s new living soundtrack and are completely improvised.

This month’s selection is Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid” (1921) with live musical score by Wolf//Goat. Get there early. Seats tend to fill up fast.

Clair Morgan, Patrick Bates, Hens at Gallery 5

April 2, 2013

photo-1

My new favorite artist on the RVA scene is singer/songwriter Clair Morgan, who I first got to see open for The Last Bison at the Camel a while back. He has a new album out entitled “No Notes” that’s already becoming a favorite to listen to. Morgan will be performing at Gallery 5 on Saturday, April 6 with Patrick Bates and Hens.

As a nice twist on promoting the show, the groups are having an Instagram photo hunt. There are posters for the show all over town and they are asking folks to find one, take a picture of it and instagram the picture with the hashtag #MorganBatesHens. Anyone that does this will get a free copy of Morgan’s album “No Notes,” a copy of Patrick Bates’ newest EP and a poster from the show.

Gallery 5 is Painting the Music

March 7, 2013

5464979

Created by singer and songwriter Dan Fisk, “Paint The Music” brings together local musicians and painters for a showcase where artists paint new work onstage using inspiration from the musicians’ live songs. The viewers’ energy becomes part of the art as audience members are encouraged to interact with the musicians and artists. The paintings are then auctioned off throughout the evening, with the artists setting minimum bids in a silent auction, and taking home 100% of the proceeds.

“Paint the Music” will feature music from Fisk, FarAway, Jared Jones and Bryce McCormick, and art from David Bromley, Nikki Galapon, Laura Page and Robby Norton. It takes place at Gallery5 on Friday, March 8.

The first “Paint The Music” show occurred on July 20, 2012 at Ebenezers Coffeehouse in DC and it was such a huge success, it is now held as a regular performance series at different locations and cities.

Check out this timelapse video of the painting that Penny Hauffe did of Ted Garber’s song “Hula Hoop Girl.”

The Cheats Movement is Pretty Famous

January 3, 2013

famous_poster_cheats_finalFirst off, if you’re not reading The Cheats Movement, you’re missing out on the one of the best blogs in Richmond. Marc Cheatham highlights the underground scene focusing a lot on art and the hip hop scene and it’s always a fun read.

The Richmond Comedy Coalition invites The Cheats Movement for its Richmond Famous series on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Gallery 5 that features live and totally unscripted comedy inspired by the true stories of some of RVA’s most interesting people (still waiting for my invite.. hint, hint RCC).

The RCC will make you laugh and after that a number of bands take the stage including Wolf//Goat, Glows in the Dark, Just PLain Sounds and Photosynthesizers. This will be the perfect night of comedy and music.
