Artists to Watch in 2012

December 29, 2011

2011 may be over, but things are already moving along in the Richmond music scene. Here are a bunch of artists who I expect to see big things from in 2012.

DEAD FAME
Seriously, I don’t need to say anything more about Dead Fame (pictured above) than I already have this past year. Just listen to them. The group has its debut EP coming out early next year and they’ve made such an impression on me, I’m excited to see what happens next. You’ve got one more chance to catch them live before 2012 when they play at GayRVA’s A-List New Year’s Eve at Aloft Hotel in Short Pump.

NELLY KATE
I had heard many good things about singer-songwriter Nelly Kate, but didn’t get the chance to see her perform until late this year at the Listening Room, and without a doubt, she completely blew me away with her layered sounds and a voice that grabs your attention like no other. She’s set to release her album “ISH ISH” early next year and she’s been raising the money to do so through a Kickstarter page. We’ll be hearing a lot more from this young woman very soon.

THE SNOWY OWLS
Snowy Owls have already been making waves throughout 2011 with their loud fuzzy rock sounds. Seriously, they were everywhere. They’ve released a few singles this year but not a full fledged album to speak of (maybe that’s in the works?). They also have one of the most entertaining live shows around.

DREW MARTIN AND THE LIMELIGHTS
These guys seemed to come out of nowhere, blasting pop rock everywhere they could. Their self-titled EP showed a lot of potential and this year, they’ve even had the chance to open for Switchfoot and the Airborne Toxic Event. Expect to hear more from this group in 2012.

THOSE MANIC SEAS
Noise rock outfit Those Manic Seas have a strong debut album and a live show that’s full of energy and creativity (the group’s ‘lead singer’ isn’t real – go to a show and you’ll understand). They’ve only played a few shows this year, but I’m expecting a full on breakout as the new year progresses.

Switchfoot and Airborne Toxic Event Make a Miracle at the National

November 30, 2011

I’m sure you’ve heard that Switchfoot and The Airborne Toxic Event are coming together to play a show at the National on Thursday, Dec. 1 as part of 102.1 The X’s “Miracle on Broad Street.”

I haven’t really paid attention to Switchfoot since 2003′s “The Beautiful Letdown.” I remember enjoying that album but failed to pay attention to the group after that. Since then, the group has released four albums including the Grammy-winning “Hello Hurricane” and the recently-released “Vice Verses.”

Right now, Switchfoot is also raising money for charity and inviting artists to submit their most creative hoodie designs for the chance to have it produced and distributed, with proceeds benefiting StandUp For Kids. The winner’s hoodie design will be produced in partnership with Jedidiah Clothing and be featured in Switchfoot’s social media channel. Plus, the winner also wins $1,500. For more information on the contest, go here.

As for the Airborne Toxic Event, I’ve been wanting to check them out since their very catchy single “Sometime Around Midnight.” They’ve been on my radar for some time and with the release of their new album, “All At Once,” they now have my attention. It’s already in my top rotation and I seriously cannot stop listening to “All I Ever Wanted” and “Numb.”

For the show at the National, local bands Against Grace and Drew Martin and the Limelights will be opening the show after winning last week’s Battle of the Bands. Both of these bands are very talented and put on a great live show.

I will say that The X usually puts on a good holiday show. The last few times I went to the “Not So Silent Night” shows, I was usually impressed and was always exposed to a new band that I really enjoyed and I expect the same at this one.

New Releases from Itchy Hearts, the Atkinsons, Drew Martin & the Limelights

May 23, 2011

Check out a few new releases from some of Richmond’s finest bands.

I’ve been obsessed over Itchy Hearts ever since I heard them perform at the Listening Room last year. And now, they’ve just released their new album “Tried to be Punk,” as collection of fun, acoustic rock songs that get your feet moving. It’s also some of the best songwriting I’ve heard from Andy Cobb and company to date. Take a listen.

Country-rock group The Atkinsons are no strangers to the Richmond scene. I’ve seen them a number of times and thought they were pretty decent. But nothing could prepare me for their incredible second album “Mile Marker.” It only goes to show that these guys have new tricks up their sleeves. It’s surprisingly good and on constant repeat.

The Atkinsons – You Could Go

Drew Martin and the Limelights is made up members of the Jim Ivins Band, yet manage to craft music into a totally different direction – one that’s full of a lot of energetic sounds and extremely catchy and very heartfelt lyrics.
