Total Control, Parquet Courts at Strange Matter

May 24, 2013

totalcontrol-e1323688826528Australian punks Total Control and Brooklyn’s Parquet Courts will be playing post-punk jams at Strange Matter on Sunday, May 26. They’ll be joined by Australia’s The UV Race and Richmond’s own Dead Fame.

Australia’s Total Control grace us with two stellar new tracks of moody garage/post-punk. The band is led by Daniel Stewart (Straightjacket Nation, UV Race) and Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Ooga Boogas), and this single comes on the heels of their excellent, massively-hyped Henge Beat LP and split-LP with Thee Oh-Sees. Both songs are exclusive to this release. “Scene From a Marriage” b/w “Contract”

Parquet Courts is a band from New York City. At the center of the group is A. Savage, who at this point is known for his collaborations with projects like Fergus & Geronimo, Teenage Cool Kids and Wiccans. Savage is joined by three other musicians (“three quarters Texans and three quarters Pisces”) and describes the bands’ debut release as The Fall meets Neil Young. On the band’s debut release, “American Specialties”, this all makes sense. The quartet wanders through the American and British underground, picking away their favorite parts with confidence.

Of Montreal at Canal Club

May 23, 2013

of-montrealJust in case you didn’t know, Of Montreal will be playing at the Canal Club on Thursday, May 23. They’re very artistic and somewhat crazy, but I love them. They have a brand new album entitled “Lousy With Sylvianbriar” coming out this fall and I can’t wait for it. Enjoy the exotic sounds of the songs below and you’ll understand why the Canal Club will be nuts when they perform.

Shy, Low Sign with Spartan Records

May 22, 2013

shylowShy, Low have signed with Seattle-based indie Spartan Records. The band’s EP, “Binary Opposition,” will be released digitally and on 12” vinyl on June 25. A string of summer dates in support of the new release have also been announced. Big congrats go out to them!

Shy, Low was founded by four members of post-metal outfit VESSEL from Richmond, Virginia in January of 2011. This experimental switch in genres resulted in a creative blend of instrumental compositions coming from the diverse and varying influences of the band’s four members. After their first tour and mild success of their debut record, the band began to contemplate what direction they wanted to take in their future musical endeavors. They strived to produce more atmospheric, emotive, and visual compositions that would demonstrate the band’s developing musical identity. Over a span of six months, Shy, Low wrote just two songs, carefully crafting and revising each section until they felt entirely confident in its structure. Out of this surgical writing process came the two tracks that would be included on the band’s second release, Binary Opposition: “Presence” and “Absence.” The digital version of the album also includes a bonus track entitled “Voyager.”

An Open Letter About the Dude Who Threw a Bottle at Toots

May 20, 2013

toots_hibbert-209300By now, you all know what happened at Dominion Riverrock this weekend. For those who need catching up, Frederick “Toots” Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals was struck in the forehead when someone in the crowd threw a glass liquor bottlle at him. Toots immediately stopped the show, headed to the hospital and the show was shut down.

Watch video of the incident below. The bottle is thrown at the 4:26 mark.

The person responsible has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault and public intoxication, according to Richmond police. Toots is doing fine and doesn’t blame Richmond for one guy’s action.

I wasn’t at this show, but I am deeply saddened and embarrassed that this happened. It’s been circulating all over the media (even Yahoo and Rolling Stone picked it up) and this moment will be one that everyone remembers about the show. So to everyone affected by this show, I say this:

1 – Stop getting completely drunk at shows. Seriously. You’re not awesome. You’re not funny. Nobody thinks you’re cool. All you’re doing is ruining everyone else’s good time and making yourself look stupid.

2 – Be respectful of others there. Hundreds if not thousands of people are trying to enjoy a show. Your actions have consequences, from as small as getting on someone’s nerves to a complete shut down of a show in this case.

3 – Don’t let the actions of one idiot ruin the showgoing experience. Keep going to shows. Everyone else at the show seemed to be enjoying themselves and having a good time. This is what the normal concert experience in Richmond is like – people who love music seeing people playing good music. Keep supporting it.
