Emperor X Hits the Spot
December 2, 2011
Emperor X, the noise/folk project of C. R. Matheny, has a wonderfully delightful new album out called “Western Teleport” that I’ve have not stopped listening to since I got it. Emperor X mainly uses an acoustic guitar and a dynamic microphone, but also uses a lot of percussive and electronic instruments. The diversity of the subject matter of the songs goes all over the place from plate tectonics to fixing broken air conditioners.
But the coolest part is that he decided to make a scavenger hunt with his fans by making plastic containers or “nodes” that contain a cassette with b-sides and outtakes from the album, and hiding them in various cities across North America. westernteleport.com lists the geolocation of where every node has been placed. The one in Richmond is supposedly in Paradise Park, but after searching twice, I have not been able to find it. Whoever finds it needs to activate the code so the rest of us can hear it.
Emperor X will be playing at The Camel on Sunday, Dec. 4 with Young Adult Fiction.
