What to Do This Weekend Besides the Richmond Folk Festival

October 14, 2011

We all know that the Richmond Folk Festival is coming to town this weekend, and while the collective of Richmond loses their minds over this event, I’m personally not that big of a fan. But there is plenty of other things going on besides the Folk Fest. Here are 5 you should check out.

1. WARREN HAYNES BAND
Blues guitarist Warren Haynes from Govt Mule and the Allman Brothers Band will be performing a solo gig at the National on Friday, Oct. 14.

2. G. LOVE AND SPECIAL SAUCE
On Saturday, Oct. 15 at the National, G. Love and Special Sauce come to play.

3. LESS THAN JAKE
Less Than Jake and a whole bunch of other bands, including Kings of Belmont, No BS Brass Band, The Big Payback (a James Brown cover band), The Gill, Cheap Thrills, Peoples Blues of Richmond and Audio Ammo will be playing Fanotberfest on Saturday on the corner of Broad and Allison Streets outside the Republic.

Check out Less Than Jake tracks from yesterday’s post.

4. BOX FIVE <3'S POE TOUR
If you’re in the literary mood, head over to the Camel on Saturday for the Box Five <3's Poe Tour. It’s a classical-meets-pop ensemble with specially-composed musical works inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories and poems.

5. SEARCHING FOR TIMOTHY
Also on Saturday, hard rockers Searching for Timothy will be playing the Canal Club.

  1. Apache Relay are opening up for G.Love–they’re pretty great, highly recommended.
